Youngsters in 2011 are as well connected and as influential as ever; riding the crest of the technological super-wave which gaining momentum by the day can often leave us struggling to tread water, almost drowning in Aps, touch-screens and smart phones!! However, as the world around us may feel ever less familiar it is important to remind ourselves that in reality, the core aspects of our life in the 21st century remain the same and if nothing else, have improved for the better.

Even though the technological innovations of the past decade have changed the way we do business, socialise, interact and communicate…people still share the same goals in life and give importance to the same things. We still look to start relationships, settle down and have families…work hard to graduate in order to pursue a desired career and save money to buy a loved one a special gift that means something today and for years to come.

In giving a gift we look to express many different emotions….love, affection, gratitude, passion, friendship…and it is right and fitting that we should want to give gifts that are as timeless as the emotions themselves that we wish to convey.

Name Necklaces are stunningly understated items of jewellery that are a must have for all girls’ jewellery boxes, especially as more and more celebrities chose to wear their name in silver or gold as their feature jewellery piece. Many people give name necklaces at birthdays or Christmas, however there is an ever increasing trend of giving name necklaces to celebrate all kinds of events, such as Graduation, Christenings and naming ceremonies, Weddings (especially for bridesmaids and flower girls) and even just to say ‘I love you’ to a mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin, partner or friend.

The giving of a Name Necklace is a beautifully individual and personal gift that is timeless and will remain a loved possession for decades to come. Technology can throw as many ‘Aps’ as it wants at us…but the Name Necklace will be the last gift standing.

High street fashion is all about one thing: names. It seems unavoidable that whatever you buy it almost certainly is branded in someway or another with the name of the designer or design house who has produced it. Far from being seen as a form of free advertising it is such branding which makes most garments fashionable with different ‘labels’ appealing in differing ways to different social groups. Whilst one group of girls might look down upon another wearing a Nike top, or Adidas trousers, they will think nothing themselves of wearing a Louis Vuitton handbag, or a Tiffany necklace. The type of designer-ware which you wear says an awful lot about how you yourself are branded, and the social grouping to which you want to belong. Although Gucci might be a high street brand, many feel that such a luxurious name will add to their own image, and by wearing branded clothing and accessories in this way they use the image which is carefully spun by fashion moguls to reflect on their own personality and the type of person they want to be seen to be.

It used to be that if you wanted to buck against this trend and show a degree of non conformity then you had to search high and low for those garments which were plain and unadorned, but there is a movement within the jewellery industry which is allowing expressive girls who reject the uniformity of brands and instead harness their own personal branding, showing their true fiesty individualism: name jewellery. Name rings and signet rings are becoming more common place, as are charm bracelets with initialing and earrings adorned with the name of the wearer. Name necklaces too have become increasingly popular showing this trend to move away from using somebody else’s brand name to raise your own profile to relying on that brand that you most want to express, brand you.

The rejection of label branded jewellery in favour of name necklaces and other name jewellery shows an independence which has been lacking in recent fashion trends, and the growing confidence of girls who have decided to wear their own name rather than that of a high street brand is the ultimate way of stating emphatically that you cannot be pigeon-holed into certain stereotypes. In fact so popular is this movement away from branded fashion to a more individual approach that the wearing of name jewellery and name necklaces seems to appeal to all manner of girls from no matter what their background or interests. What such a trend will mean for the fashion industry in the future is anybody’s guess, but it could be that almost a decade after the Spice Girls split, girl power and individualism are back on the agenda.

You only have to stumble across the number of cafes and specialist cup-cake shops selling tiny perfectly round delicious looking cup-cakes to realise how big an impact shows like Sex and the City can have in shaping the trends on our high street. When the star of the hit show Carrie is seen wearing a name necklace in the adverts for the new film it should therefore come as no surprise that ripples of excitement about name necklaces have been sent throughout the UK. Sarah Jessica Parker’s character regularly wears the solid silver name pendant bearing the name of her character hung on a simple silver necklace, but she is not the only trend driving celebrity to be shot wearing a name necklace. Cheryl Cole recently wore a gold name necklace when judging on last year’s X Factor, and the recent big screen hit Precious which stars Mariah Carey even has the eponymous character played by Gabourey Sidibe wearing a name necklace on their posters.

Its not just the TV which attracts name necklace wearing celebrities, however, but big names in the music industry have jumped on the 2010 name necklace trend. Madge herself has been seen wearing a big “M” necklace whilst Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears, Gwen Stefani, Siena Miller and Christina Aguilera have all recently been snapped by the paparazzi sporting name necklaces and name pendants. Even Paris Hilton has a name necklace.

With celebrities leading the way it seems that 2010 is very much the year of the name necklace, and High Street shops will soon be filling the shelves with name necklaces.
